Outback New South Wales

There are not many regions as diverse, exciting and authentic as Outback NSW. Stretching from Walgett in the north to Wentworth in the south, the region offers a sample of the real Australian outback. When you are driving into a historic old town at sunset or catching up with the colourful bush characters in a charming rural pub, kicking up your heels at a country racetrack or getting a thrill at a heart-thumping rodeo, it’s all about the simple pleasures in life.

For a dash of history and heritage, fearless wanderers can follow the stock routes of cattle king Sir Sidney Kidman on the Kidman Way, or take the fascinating Darling River Run, which runs between Wentworth and the iconic town of Brewarrina – home of the ancient, maze-like fish traps. Visit the picturesque Menindee Lakes or take a side trip to peek at the many art galleries in Broken Hill.

White Cliffs is home to the distinctive light crystal opal – a gem that has literally put the town on the map. Gold rush history is also plentiful in the region; after all, it was just over a century ago that the promise of untold riches lured prospectors to the area now known as Corner Country. Corner Country, is literally a living museum, offering some of the finest examples of Outback fauna and flora, plus remnants of forty thousand years of human occupation.
