This is an excellent tour that you should do if you have the time in Hilo. They provide everything needed - hotel pickup at Grand Naniloa, snacks and drinks and flashlights and jackets for the after dark hike to the lava flow and tube walk. Special shout-out to our guide Tiffany who kept us entertained and laughing all day and night. She is truly first class and loves what she does and that shows. Great dinner with drinks at a local spot before the hikes after dark. This is a must do for the Big Island. You won’t be disappointed.
I want to start by warning folks to double check on the actual tour website so you know what you’re really signing up for. The Viator page has apparently been outdated for well over a year, promising dinner and wine tasting. According to our tour guide, that hasn’t been a part of the tour since before Covid but neither Viator nor the tour company have bothered to update these third party pages despite several complaints from past customers (different third party sites offered a variety of experiences that are not a part of the tour that you actually paid for). Aside from the annoyance of being misled and the fine print that keeps you from being reimbursed in any way for the poor maintenance and upkeep of their services, the tour was phenomenal. Our experience was absolutely incredible and we know it has everything to do with our tour guide Don. We lucked out and basically ended up getting a private tour to ourselves. The entire day, Don was giving us recommendations on things to do, see, and visit. It’s also very clear that he loves his job and is passionate about the island and the Volcanoes National Park. The amount of knowledge he has on the plant life, different lava formations, volcano eruption history and how it’s impacted the locals and the surrounding terrain… his passion showed through and was truly contagious. He made the desert-like landscape seem all the more beautiful and full of life. He also did his best to make the most of our day by taking detours to show us other highlights outside of the typical tour and then other trails to check out if we return on our own time. Seeing him go out of his way to really give the best experience to visitors was unexpected. He really went above and beyond for us and absolutely made up for any disappointment over the booking inconsistencies. While I would caution folks and suggest they book directly through the website to double check what is actually promised, the tour itself is absolutely worthwhile, especially with Don. Viator gets a rating of 0-1 stars from us but the tour with Don as our guide is definitely a 5 star experience.
The tour guide was super cool but I feel like If I had gone on my own I could’ve been done within a few hours and had the rest of the day to do other things or even explore the park even more. There were no hikes, we didn’t visit any winery like it said, and it felt like we spent more time driving than actually experiencing the park. Definitely just go to the park on your own unless you want a full lesson on volcanoes
We had a fantastic experience with the evening volcano tour. Best tour, best guide, best Christmas! Rick was probably our best guide while we were in Hawaii, he was knowledgeable, informative, funny and entertaining. We thoroughly enjoyed every part of this tour and would do it again in a heart beat. The sights, the food, the company, the wine were all amazing. One of our best Christmas's. Everyone from KapohoKine was easy to work with and extremely helpful. We highly recommend this company, this tour, and this guide.
We had lisa as our tour guide and she was so so so fun and knowledgeable! She really made this the most amazing thing ever! We did the evening volcano tour on our first full day in Hawaii and it was the best choice because now we know what we’re looking at and we went to SO many places and saw SO much in one day! It is absolutely worth the money ! I loved every second of it and literally have over 300 photos from all the different places we went and saw it’s breathtaking. Ask for lisa if possible she’s wonderful!
I actually took this tour in July 2018, however due to travelling all over the world for the last 18 months, I am just in the process of writing all the reviews. I was recommended the evening volcano tour by this company from the official Hawaiian Tourist Office after my original tour with another company was cancelled due to the volcano erupting at the time. I had flew to Big Island from Honolulu to do a helicopter ride and wanted to spend the rest of the day exploring the island. I 100% recommend this tour! Jesse, our tour guide, was fantastic! He knew his stuff really well and he ensured the tour was more personalised, catered to what we wanted to do since there was only myself and another solo traveller on the tour! He’s just a laid back, happy guy and he honestly made the tour so entertaining! We drove through old Hilo and took the scenic route through Hilo to get some good photos of the landscape and bays. We visited a few different waterfalls including Rainbow Falls throughout the tour and we were able to get out and explore the area which included taking a loop trail around the waterfall to get the best views! One of the most unique experiences for me though was the caves. Jesse gave us flashlights and whilst the opening area of the cave wasn’t massive, it was certainly interesting to look around in. You could go further as well as some of the tunnels can go on for 20 miles or more! Included in the tour was a BBQ meal at the winery. The girl over the phone, when I booked the tour, didn’t mentioned the tour included wine tasting and so I was surprised when we first arrived and Jesse explained what we were doing. We were able to sample 8 wines before deciding on one to have with our meal. The BBQ was lovely as well; we sat outdoors at thw winery and enjoyed the evening. At the end of the tour, we had a choice between going up to a high point to see the lava flow from Fissure 8 (the normal tour) or we could have a quick tour of the winery and then go through some country roads to see the glow from 12 miles away (the one we choose to do) – it was still spectacular! The winery tour was interesting as we got to see the behind the scenes process. Even the journey back to Hilo was interesting and Jesse was kind enough to drop me back off at my hotel. He was a fantastic tour guide from start to finish and I 100% recommend to the tour, it made my trip!
Long drive in an old van. Guide was knowledgeable and pleasant. Dinner was less than a roadside food stand. Winery was equivalent to a roadside stand. National Park Visitor center was a brief restroom break. Volcano crater was inactive and clouded over (not the tour operators fault). Lava flow beach area was good. Grossly overpriced for what was delivered. We took three day tours during the trip. This tour was the most expensive and the worst value.
The Star Gazing Tour was part of an amazing day! Our driver Lawrence was a font of wisdom and never ending snippets of information that deepened our understanding of the amazing Vista spread before us. It was also an inspirational to listen to the observations made by the astrophysicist who lead another subGroup. She was very knowledgeable, and clearly loves her Work! An amazing Tour, helped by extraordinarily clear skies. This Tour is highly recommended!
